Mayor Mark Elkins told the governing body that, in part because of an opinion from the Kansas attorney general, the Johnson County Commission postponed a vote on a countywide public-safety tax until March 2026.
“Elkins said the county commission announced that the vote on a public safety tax for the county has been delayed until, I believe, March 2026,” he said. The mayor said the city had removed a county presentation from the October agenda and will reschedule if the county proceeds with an election in March 2026.
The mayor said Leawood staff will reschedule a county presentation as appropriate closer to March if the county moves forward. No formal city action was taken on the county timetable; the mayor’s remarks were part of his regular report to the governing body.
