Leawood schedules work sessions to plan World Cup activities and to advance 90th Street and Lee Boulevard project

The Leawood governing body voted unanimously to schedule work sessions aimed at coordinating city participation in 2026 World Cup activities and to advance planning for the 90th Street and Lee Boulevard site.
Councilmember Lisa Harrison said the Aug. 25 work session is intended to let department heads and public-safety chiefs make reservations and begin budgeting for special events tied to the World Cup. “We’ve been doing a lot of talking about what we might do, and we’ve realized we need to make some decisions about what we will do so that we can get the planning going and the budgeting going,” Harrison said.
Harrison told the council the meetings she referenced have included representatives from the Leawood Chamber of Commerce and community leaders from health care, hospitality and Park Place. The council approved a separate resolution to call a Sept. 29 work session focused on the city’s deliberations over plans for the 90th Street and Lee Boulevard property; Councilmember Stoddard said that session will follow up on prior meetings so staff and the city’s consultant can get direction on next steps with the goal of approving a final plan by year-end.
The governing body also approved a resolution that adjusts the special meeting time from 7 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. so the work session and meeting can be scheduled on the same evening; the resolution included repeal of Resolution No. 6391. All three resolutions were adopted by voice vote with the ayes prevailing.
The governing body indicated the Aug. 25 work session will be open to the public but is expected to follow the practice of not taking public comment during work sessions. City staff said the work sessions are meant to provide direction to departments so they may begin logistical planning and budgeting for any events the council ultimately directs the city to host or support.
The council scheduled the Aug. 25 and Sept. 29 work sessions after motions and seconding were made on each resolution; the meetings were adopted by unanimous voice votes with no roll-call record of individual votes recorded in the transcript.
What’s next: The council will hold the Aug. 25 work session (if the resolution stands as adopted) to receive staff and consultant information and to give direction on which event options the city should pursue and how to allocate staff time and resources.
