Summary
On second reading the Board of Education removed a provision that would have authorized the district to pay accrued sick leave to beneficiaries and approved keeping the existing practice of crediting sick leave to retirement systems instead.

The Hickman County Board of Education on Aug. 4 approved a revision to its accrued-leave policy that removes language authorizing the district to pay accrued sick leave to an employee—eneficiary in the event the employee dies while serving. The change preserves the district's current practice of letting the retirement system convert accrued sick days into service credit for beneficiaries.
A staff speaker described the policy in detail and recommended following the Tennessee School Boards Association (TSBA) model policy that directs sick-day credit to the retirement system rather than a one-time district payout. "My advice to the board is to stick with the traditional process of letting the retirement system gain the number of sick days," the staff member said, explaining that the retirement credit increases a beneficiary's monthly retirement check.
Board members discussed the prior addition and said, after review, they preferred to strike the district-payment language that had been added at first reading. Human-resources staff member Miss Bowman was noted as providing input on the recommendation. The board approved the revised policy by roll-call vote.
Ending: The revised policy will be implemented according to standard board-policy procedures; staff said the change aligns the district with TSBA recommendations and avoids creating an ongoing district liability for one-time payouts.
