NCDOT gives road, bridge and resurfacing updates for Sampson County
Summary
North Carolina Department of Transportation staff briefed the Sampson County commissioners on road closures, bridge completions, resurfacing contracts and safety studies along US 421.
NCDOT maintenance and construction staff reported ongoing closures, recent bridge completions and multiple resurfacing and preservation contracts affecting Sampson County.
Lance Zeeson, representing NCDOT maintenance, said two roads were closed for large pipe work (Bearskin Road toward Salemburg and another toward Fason) and that crews hoped to reopen one closure by the end of the week; he also noted hurricane preparedness activities and litter sweep plans. Zeeson reported the county maintenance office employed about 40 staff and listed recent county accomplishments including roughly 52,000 linear feet of ditching, 1,200 feet of cross-lines and about 2,200 linear feet of driveways installed in the last fiscal year.
Daniel Jones, NCDOT construction, told commissioners the Bradshaw Road bridge over Ward Swamp was accepted April 30 and a bridge on US 701 over Bill Swamp was accepted July 11. Jones said bridge replacement work on Boykin Bridge Road (Bridge 85) has begun with an anticipated construction completion date of June 14, 2026. He summarized resurfacing and paving contracts: a recently completed 15.3-mile contract, a 24.45-mile contract about 91% complete, a contract tentatively beginning in August to pave Keener Road, Carnegie Road, Preacher Henry Road, Summerhill Road, and segments of East Roseborough and East Clinton streets, and another 21.7-mile contract to widen and pave NC 41 from the Bladen County line to Ward Road plus NC 55 (Hornet Dunn Highway) and Wildcat Road.
Jones also noted a county stakeholder meeting on a safety study for US 421 between the New Hanover/Pender county line and Mount Gilead Church Road; six intersections in Sampson County are under review for safety improvements, including US 421 at Mount Gilead Church Road, Union School Road, River Road, NC 903, NC 41 and Willard Road.
