Council approves $400,000 amendment for library furniture procurement funded by state grant

The Glendale City Council on Sept. 30 authorized an amendment to a city furniture contract to complete grant‑funded improvements at the central library. The action dispensed with competitive bidding for the work and increased the existing agreement with JK Micklin Inc., doing business as Yamada, by $400,000 and extended the contract through June 30, 2026.

The Library, Arts & Culture Department secured state grant funding from the California State Library to furnish the main library floor to complement recent facility improvements, city staff said. The total estimated cost for the final stage of the grant‑funded work is about $500,000; the contract amendment will increase the vendor’s not‑to‑exceed amount by $400,000 and was included in the adopted FY 2025‑26 budget.

Staff and approvals Public Works staff and the Library, Arts & Culture director told council members the city already maintains a citywide furniture contract with the vendor and that using the existing vendor would allow timely completion of the grant‑funded work. Staff noted the existing contract had approximately $147,000 of remaining capacity before the proposed amendment.

No members of the public submitted speaker cards on the item. Council approved the resolution to dispense with competitive bidding and to authorize the city manager to execute the amendment; the vote was recorded by roll call.

Next steps Staff said the amendment will fund final furniture configuration, procurement and installation for the grant scope; the project schedule extends through June 30, 2026. The library director and public works staff will oversee the procurement and installation activities and report progress as required by the grant.
