Student report: Sonoma Mountain and Carpe Diem students describe trips, projects and graduation

A Sonoma Mountain High School senior updated the board on academic projects, community-building activities, field trips and alternative graduation ceremonies at Carpe Diem and Sonoma Mountain.
Beau Keith, a senior at Sonoma Mountain High School, presented a site report to the board describing student activities and site highlights at Carpe Diem and Sonoma Mountain. He said both small alternative schools held a combined alternative-education graduation on the Casa Grande football field last June, and he described opening-week community-building events and frequent hikes to local parks and science venues.
Beau outlined curricular work: English classes studied the Beat Generation and moved into global sustainability units; history covered 1960s social movements with student research essays; science included two student-led research projects; and math blended Math 1 and Math 2 concepts. He noted new staff at the small schools (a new full-time principal and a new full-time science and art teacher) and said Carpe Diem and Sonoma Mountain's small enrollments allow close teacher-student connections and opportunities to co-enroll in activities at larger high schools.
Beau said he plans to pursue work as an electrician after graduating. Trustees and attendees thanked him for the report and asked questions about student participation in athletics and elective programs.
