Estill County board approves clarified maternity leave policy 31233 to align with Kentucky statute

The Estill County Board of Education on Aug. 14 approved a revised maternity leave policy, numbered 31233, intended to clarify the district’s approach to complying with recent Kentucky statutory changes, board staff said.
“Because of the new, KRS, we had to have a policy for maternity leave. We adopted the policy that KSBA sent us,” said board staff member Mr. Brock, referring to the Kentucky statute and to a model policy provided by the Kentucky School Boards Association (KSBA). Brock told the board that, after review, the district found ambiguities in the model language and adopted revisions to clarify the district’s intended approach.
Brock said the law gives the district until 2030 to adopt an official policy and that the board needs a plan that is “fiscally responsible.” “It kind of outlines exactly what our process will be to get to the point where we can fulfill that law,” he said.
Board Member Tammy Hardy moved to approve the revised policy; Carrie Smallwood seconded. The board voted five‑zero to adopt the clarified policy 31233.
