Resident urges council to oppose Hudbay Minerals’ Copper World project, cites water and air concerns

During the council’s Call to the Public on Sept. 8, resident Rick Corrado urged the Town of Sahuarita to oppose the Copper World (Hudbay Minerals) mining project, saying the proposal would threaten local water supplies, air quality and regional tourism and would provide limited long‑term jobs or local tax benefit.
Corrado told the council that Copper Ridge Elementary and Copper View Elementary are within roughly 700 yards of the project’s projected border and said he believed the mine would pollute surface and subsurface water, damage the aquifer and harm habitat. He also said Hudbay had signed a supply agreement with Mitsubishi Materials for concentrate exports and argued the project would send material overseas without adequate local economic return.
Corrado asked the council to adopt a formal resolution opposing the project even if the mine’s approvals lie largely with state and federal agencies; he said the matter affects the entire region and asked the council to consider protecting air and water resources.
Council members did not act on the request during the meeting; the mayor reminded the public that council members may request staff follow-up or place an item on a future agenda. Corrado’s remarks were recorded in the public-comment portion of the minutes.
