Commission considers formal agreement to register ankle-monitor providers before a vote next week

The staff presentation said the provider has submitted required paperwork to the criminal court and that the judge supports allowing monitored defendants to be released on bond with electronic monitoring in some cases. “There’s an order in your packet that shows that the check-in of that letter has been approved and our orders are brought, provide the services of ankle monitors and the GPS monitors,” the staff member said. The staff member emphasized that the agreement should not create liability for the county or require county payment: “This agreement, whatever we come up with, cannot create liability for the county, and the county is not paying for anything.”
Commissioners asked whether indigent defendants would be covered; staff replied there is no indigent fund required by the statute and that the county could create one but that this agreement does not establish county responsibility for payment. Commissioners asked whether the sheriff and judge supported the arrangement; the presenter said the judge did and had issued an order, and that the sheriff had not been consulted in detail but may be supportive. The presenter recommended a sample resolution that would approve the agreement and authorize the mayor to sign. The presenter said a vote on a resolution would be scheduled for next week.
No resolution vote took place at the workshop; the commission indicated it would consider a resolution next week that would both approve an agreement with the provider and authorize the mayor to sign it.
