Outside consultant: Portland school board’s TTI profile shows strong drive but gaps in execution; recommends clearer goals and stricter boundaries

A national consultant who debriefed Portland Public Schools board members at a retreat said the team’s behavioral profile shows strong drive and willingness to try new approaches — but too few members with natural orientations for detailed execution and follow-through.

Dr. Sean Joseph, a senior consultant and interim superintendent who led the TTI (DISC-style) debrief for the board, told members their distribution of behavioral types creates both opportunity and risk: the group is ‘‘task oriented’’ and ‘‘willing to put long hours in,’’ he said, but the team lacks natural ‘‘analyzers’’ and ‘‘implementers’’ who tend to gather precise data and drive execution.

Why it matters: Without clearer roles, timelines and accountability structures, the board’s dynamic could produce many initiatives but not the steady follow-through that staff need to implement large projects. Joseph warned that, for the superintendent and district staff, that can lead to burnout and to initiatives that are never completed.
