Board grants authority to pursue school facility grant; proposal includes cafeteria, CTE wing and Davidson River consolidation option
Summary
The board authorized staff to apply for a rapid-turnaround grant with proposals that could include a new cafeteria, expanded CTE facilities and creating a 'school-within-a-school' for Davidson River students to access more courses. Board members voted to allow staff to pursue a grant opportunity with an October 3 deadline; the presenter outlined candidate projects that could be included in the application and said the final grant would return to the boards for approval before submission to the state.
Proposed grant elements The grant concept presented to the board included: a new cafeteria; a new wing for career and technical education (CTE) space and potential science-classroom upgrades; and consolidating Davidson River School into a separate wing at another campus (a "school within a school") that would preserve a separate entrance while giving those students access to CTE and other courses. The presenter said some CTE classrooms are undersized and not wired for current equipment, and that consolidating Davidson River students could expand credential and course opportunities while preserving small-class supports for certain programs.
Process and timing The grant opened with a quick turnaround; staff requested board permission to prepare the application and said the district and county commissioners would both need to approve the final submission. Board members asked about county-tier scoring (the presenter said Transylvania County is currently tier 2) and agreed to return the completed grant for board approval in September before DPI filing.
Vote and next steps The board made a motion to approve preparation of the grant application and a second was recorded; a final application will be returned for board approval prior to submission.
