Bonita Springs holds annual downtown cleanup; city supplies volunteers with gear and refreshments

"They collect some, gloves, bags, trash grabbers, safety vests. We provide coffee and donuts and protein bars for people, and they go around the downtown area and they clean up," Carissa said.
The event is recurring: resident speakers and city officials described long-running participation. Councilman Nigel Folek called the cleanup a long-standing community effort. "This is probably at least my fourteenth or fifteenth and what's really great about this is if you go back and remember years ago when we started this, that we would have, 2 full sized dumpsters and we'd fill them," Folek said, adding that turnout and care for public spaces had improved over time.
Volunteers were asked to collect trash wherever they found it in the downtown area and to drop filled bags at a dumpster positioned across the street from the registration site. Organizers provided a map of recommended downtown areas that need special attention but said volunteers could work anywhere in the downtown district. Participants referenced specific local corridors, including the Old 41/Old 41 corridor and nearby streets, as regular cleanup areas.
Residents who spoke during the event described community pride and long-term involvement. One resident said she and others have volunteered for about 10 years; another said she has lived in the area for six years and came to help keep the town "beautiful." Councilman Folek thanked staff and volunteers for their work and noted the event fosters neighborly connections as much as it improves public spaces.
City staff handled logistics on site, providing safety vests, trash grabbers and collection bags and arranging a central drop-off. Organizers also offered light refreshments to volunteers. No formal city council actions were recorded in the transcript of the event remarks; the session consisted of on-site remarks, volunteer coordination and public appreciation.
"Thank you everyone for coming out and helping to clean up the downtown area and helping to keep Bonita beautiful," Carissa said as the event wound down.
