Guided Riverwalks, Night on the Common and Dog River Day set as outreach focus for Northfield

The Northfield Town Riverwalk Working Group set dates and outreach plans to promote the riverwalk and recruit volunteers, aiming to reach broader audiences through the farmers market, school contacts and local events.
Group members emphasized that guided walks and event outreach will build public awareness and help shape future trail planning. Janan Ham, who organized recent guided walks, reported that participants were enthusiastic and that outreach should be broadened beyond existing channels.
"Everybody I talked to was kinda like, wait. What? We were gonna do a river walk?" Janan said, describing the reaction from 16 people she surveyed. Janan proposed two guided-walk times for Tuesday, Sept. 16: about 3:30 p.m. and about 4:45 p.m., timed to overlap with the farmers market. She said the later time accommodates market traffic and may let families stop for dinner afterward. "I did 2 walks the day of the farmer's market ... so I'm going to do the same kind of things," she said.
The group agreed to use social media and community groups for promotion. Members suggested posting a single Facebook post with a picture and then sharing that post to relevant local groups rather than relying solely on Front Porch Forum. Janan said she will send pictures, create a PowerPoint and provide sticker art for volunteers to distribute.
School outreach was highlighted as a priority. Members recommended contacting teachers and school staff (Leslie and Mike were named) to coordinate student involvement; Janan agreed to follow up. The committee discussed timing the October walks to coincide with a Dog River Day event organized by the Dog River Conservancy and Mad Dog Trout Unlimited; Samantha Aronson of Mad Dog Trout Unlimited met with committee members and the group tentatively identified Oct. 18 as a target event.
Night on the Common (Sept. 23) will also be a focus. Committee members agreed to build a shared display, place photos of walkers, and coordinate with the town Accessibility Committee so exhibits are at accessible locations on the common. The group arranged to share easels and laminated materials and discussed logistical details such as ladders and where to place displays.
What happened at the meeting: guided-walk times were agreed in principle (Sept. 16 at about 3:30 p.m. and about 4:45 p.m.). Janan will publicize the walks, follow up with school contacts and prepare display materials for Night on the Common and Oct. 18 Dog River Day.
Next steps: Janan Ham to finalize promotion materials and contact school staff; committee members to staff a Night on the Common table and coordinate accessible placement; members to solicit photos from Cheney Field walks and other recent outings for displays.
