Columbus Marathon to pass through Bexley on Oct. 19; director says 15,000 runners expected

Darris Blackford, race director for the Columbus Marathon, told the council that the marathon will pass through Bexley on Oct. 19 and that about 15,000 runners will be in Bexley around the race window — a roughly 107% temporary population increase in a short period, he said.
Blackford said the first runners will arrive in Bexley around 7:40 a.m. and the last runners will pass through a little after 9 a.m. He described coordination with Bexley police, volunteers and community partners and noted a long-standing relationship with Nationwide Children's Hospital; since 2012 the marathon partnership has raised about $15 million for children's hospitals, he said.
Council members praised the marathon's charitable mission and local engagement; several said they appreciated organizers' efforts to notify residents and to clean the route after the event. Blackford said race staff and a cleanup crew drive the route early the next morning to pick up any remaining trash.
