The discussion noted Campton Hills currently has no full-service grocery store; a trustee observed that the village’s gas station sells a significant amount of food and beverages that would be covered if the village later gained additional retailers. A board member said the state legislature has codified the grocery tax but allowed municipalities the option to adopt local collection after pushback at the local level.
Trustees agreed it would be prudent to have an ordinance drafted so a future board could adopt or reverse the change if local conditions or retail development changed. No motion or vote on the ordinance was recorded at the meeting.
The issue will be placed on a future agenda for formal consideration if trustees choose to proceed.
