Mayor: municipal vehicle registration fee changes will reflect actual start date

Mayor Kim Smith told the Onalaska Common Council on Sept. 9 that the city will clarify how it records the start date for its new municipal vehicle registration fee. The clarification follows citizen contacts reporting the fee showing on vehicle registration notices earlier than residents expected.
"We want to just make a clear statement and everyone aware in the record that any future changes regarding the vehicle registration, regarding perhaps the sunset date, any increases or decreases to the fee, will use this starting date of that it would be changing, reflecting the date when it has actually started," the mayor said, adding the actual start date had been unanticipated from the viewpoint of some users.
No council action was taken; the mayor presented the clarification as information to be on the record and to guide how future fee changes will be dated in notifications.
