Mary Anne Scott, speaking as chair of the America250 committee for the Tullahoma chapter of the National Daughters of the American Revolution, asked the board to include Revolutionary War patriots among the events and memorials the city will plan for the nation’s 250th birthday.
“I would suggest that a very least, we have the History Park, Veterans Park located downtown,” Scott said, noting that many Revolutionary War veterans settled in the area after the war and that local chapters are prepared to participate. Scott described past local DAR work, including a plaque dedication and purchase of a memorial tulip poplar tree intended as a liberty tree to honor patriots buried in Coffee County.
Alderman Kirkley then moved to have city staff advertise for community volunteers, collect interested participants and organize an initial meeting to begin planning the 250th celebration and related events; the motion carried 6-0. Kirkley urged inclusive membership for the committee and suggested subcommittees for proposed themes such as the Civil War, World War II/space-race era, and the Revolutionary War.
During public comment Scott said the local DAR chapter would be willing to participate directly or through partnerships. The board’s formal motion instructs staff to solicit volunteers and organize meetings; staff will handle advertising and scheduling the committee’s initial meeting.
No budget or event dates were provided during the meeting; the transcript records the board’s direction but does not record follow-up dates or assigned budget authority.
