Interim superintendent says Auditor of State letter flagged eight fiscal indicators; board urged to act

Steve Marlow, interim superintendent, told the Twinsburg Board of Education on Aug. 6 that the district received a letter from the Ohio Auditor of State that applies new financial-health indicators intended to flag early fiscal stress.
“We did receive a letter last week. We have been identified. There are 17 total indicators. We had 8 indicators that were either cautionary or critical,” Marlow said, describing the state’s tool as an early-warning system that allows districts to take proactive measures to avoid designation as fiscal caution, fiscal watch or fiscal emergency.
Marlow said district staff and the board will need to work together to develop strategies to address the identified stressors so the district does not move into a formal fiscal watch or fiscal emergency status. He described existing tools such as the five-year forecast and the state’s fiscal-monitoring categories and emphasized the need for collaborative, proactive responses.
Marlow also noted the timing was not ideal for his first board meeting but said he looked forward to working with staff and the board to address the issues before the start of the school year. The district did not provide additional line-item detail about which indicators were flagged at the meeting; Marlow said the letter arrived the prior week and that addressing the issues will be a focus of district work.
