Paris council authorizes city manager to join Purdue Pharma national settlement participation

A staff presenter told the council the settlement arises from national litigation connected to Purdue's bankruptcy and that the city must return the participation form by Sept. 30 to preserve the option to receive any settlement funds. The form would require the city to release claims against Purdue and the Sackler family.
Staff said Paris had participated previously in litigation coordinated by the Texas attorney general involving other manufacturers and distributors but had not received proceeds from those earlier actions to date. The staff presenter said some earlier settlements limited the use of proceeds to opioid-related programs such as education and addiction prevention; the presenter said the terms of the Purdue settlement and any restrictions on funds were not yet fully known.
The presenter recommended authorizing the city manager to submit the form so the city could decide later whether to accept any settlement funds once details and restrictions were known.
A council member commented that "Purdue is a particular bad actor, in all of this," and the council approved the recommendation 6-0. The duplicated agenda item was omitted from further consideration.
