The Newman City Council on Aug. 26 adopted a resolution declaring a public nuisance at 737 Barrington Street and authorized moving forward with abatement under the city's nuisance code.
A city code enforcement staff member presented photos and described violations observed at the property, including inoperable and accumulating vehicles, noncompliant landscaping and driveway paving, drainage concerns and impacts to a city water-utility box. The presenter cited Newman Municipal Code provisions, including chapter 8.02 (nuisances) and a provision addressing storage of abandoned or inoperable vehicles (stated in the record as section 9.05 0.01).
The presenter said the resident has been cooperative in part, has begun removing some vehicles and requested time. Staff reported a timeline that would require removal of a minimum of two vehicles per week, with the goal of full compliance by September. Staff recommended the council adopt the nuisance resolution to preserve the city's right to abate if the owner failed to complete the work.
A council member moved to adopt the resolution declaring the existence of a public nuisance under Ordinance No. 95-4; the motion passed 5-0. The record shows staff will monitor the staged removal and proceed to abatement if the owner does not reach compliance within the timeline discussed.
