The Cass County Board of Commissioners voted to refer a motion concerning the county’s classification and compensation study to the board’s salary committee for further review. Commissioners said the committee will focus on department-head classifications before the board considers adopting changes countywide.
The motion to implement the class-and-compensation study was introduced during unfinished business, and several commissioners said department heads had not been adequately reviewed in earlier drafts. Chair Jones and commissioners discussed convening the salary committee—which the chair described as including Commissioners Langley, Grice, Lee and the chair—along with county administrators Jen and Beth (county staff names recorded during the meeting) to meet with individual department heads prior to bringing recommendations back to the full board.
A commissioner moved to refer implementation of the study to the salary committee; another commissioner seconded the referral and the board approved the referral. The chair asked county staff to coordinate a salary-committee meeting and to invite department heads to attend individually so their classifications could be discussed in detail.
Commissioners said if committee review is completed quickly, the committee could call a special board meeting for a vote before the next regular meeting of the Committee of the Whole (COW). The chair asked county staff to collect availability and to notify department heads when the committee meeting would be scheduled.
The referral does not itself authorize implementation of the study; it directs committee review of department-head classifications and requires the salary committee to return recommendations to the full board for any final action.
