Resident urges Clover Park board to increase trafficking awareness education

Ursula Scott, who said she lives in Lakewood, told the Clover Park School District board she is concerned about child trafficking in the region and asked the district to expand awareness and education for parents, staff and students.
“My concern about the trafficking of children, especially in our area,” Scott said, citing proximity to international airports and major highways and seaports as increasing vulnerability. She described a past incident she said she witnessed at Villa Plaza several years ago involving a girl she estimated was about 12 who exchanged money with an adult and was then driven away. Scott said she reported that incident to non-emergency police lines at the time.
Scott told the board she spoke with Superintendent Banner and intends to send the superintendent a letter with more details. She asked the board to examine what the district and parents can do to protect children and to ensure staff and parents are aware of trafficking signs and prevention steps.
The board president cut Scott’s comment short when the speaker’s three-minute public-comment allotment expired. Banner acknowledged receiving Scott’s concern and the superintendent said he would pass along her letter to board members, per the public-comment process.
