Board adopts revised AI acceptable‑use policy in second and final reading

The Romulus Community Schools Board of Education adopted a revised acceptable use policy addressing artificial intelligence in a second and final reading at its Sept. 8 meeting.
Trustee Davis moved adoption of the reissued policy (board policy 08/2001, acceptable use) and Trustee McCarthy supported the motion. The motion’s rationale, read at the meeting, stated that adopting an AI board policy “demonstrates the district's commitment to preparing students for the future, supporting staff with guidance and training, and ensuring AI is used safely, ethically, and equitably.” The motion carried on a unanimous roll call vote: Davis, McCarthy, Kennard, Kamal, Rogers and Laster voted yes.
Adam Denison, who helped draft the policy language, addressed the board and noted that AI has become widespread among staff and students and that the district needs policy guidance. “AI is not going anywhere,” Denison said during remarks to the board, calling the policy necessary to set expectations and manage risk.
The board recorded the motion as adopted; the approved policy will be added to the district’s board policy manual and implemented through guidance and training for staff and students. The board noted there are no immediate budget implications stated in the motion.
