Parent asks when Sunrise Scholars before‑and‑after program will start; superintendent says district will temporarily fund service

At the Sept. 8 Romulus Community Schools board meeting, parent Deandre Green asked when Sunrise Scholars before‑and‑after school services would begin at Romulus Elementary, saying existing bus pickup times would force his child to ride for almost two hours before school starts.
“...the bus pickup is at 06:13. So that mean that they will be riding around for almost 2 hours with school starting at 08:40,” Green said during public comment.
Dr. Benjamin Edmonson, the district superintendent, responded during the meeting that board leadership had discussed Sunrise Scholars earlier that day and approved moving forward despite a delay in state funding. “Funding hasn't been released, but we just said today, we're gonna do it period. We'll just take it out of general fund until we get the money from the state,” Edmonson said. He added he could not promise service would begin the next day but hoped it could be organized by Wednesday and offered the parent his administrative assistant as a contact for follow‑up.
