Commission OKs temporary summer tow yard at Malibu Middle and High School

The commission approved a conditional use permit allowing a weekend/holiday temporary tow yard in the upper parking lot of Malibu Middle and High School for the summer season, with screening, drip pans and staffing conditions.
The Planning Commission on June 16 approved a conditional use permit allowing the city to operate a temporary impound/tow yard in the upper parking lot of Malibu Middle and High School (30215 Morning View Drive) on weekends and holidays from June 28 through Labor Day.
Public Safety applied for the permit and staff recommended approval with conditions. The Upper Lot would be used for impounded vehicles during peak summer weekends and holidays from 8 a.m. to 7 p.m.; the lot can accommodate about 31 vehicles. Conditions include temporary fencing with black screening, drip pans under stored vehicles to limit fluid leaks and an on‑site attendant; impounded vehicles must be cleared to an out‑of‑town storage yard by the end of each day.
City Public Safety Coordinator Luis Flores said the operation is similar to prior years' arrangements, the site will be secured while in use and sheriff‑sanctioned impound procedures will be followed. A member of the public who worked on prior programs said the arrangement has been used historically.
Commissioners discussed screening and security and approved the permit by roll call.
