Planning director reports progress on Palisades and Woolsey fire rebuilds; debris removal continuing

The City of Malibu's community development director told the Planning Commission on June 16 that planning staff continue to process wildfire rebuild applications and coordinate debris removal and other recovery services.
Director Yolanda Bundy reported the Palisades fire‑rebuild program had 39 planning submittals under review and 25 planning approvals (five more than at the previous meeting); three applications were in building plan check. For the broader Woolsey fire rebuilds, staff reported 365 applications approved by the planning department, roughly 103 homes under construction and 198 families issued certificates of occupancy, figures staff said are evolving as families move through permitting and construction.
Staff also updated the commission that roughly 322 beachfront properties had been destroyed in the incident that prompted Army Corps involvement; the Army Corps completed cleanup on approximately 70% of properties that opted in before Pacific Coast Highway reopened in May. Staff said 14 properties remained nonresponsive and the city is working with the city attorney's office to add nine of those beachfront properties to an Army Corps clean‑up list and expects to pursue that on or about July 7. FEMA continues to coordinate regional cleanup support, staff said.
Upcoming deadlines and hearings noted by staff include: a city council hearing on June 23 to consider planning commission recommendations on temporary use permits and sign permits; a June 30 final deadline for debris removal from properties; a July 14 council hearing on a fire rebuild fee‑waiver resolution; and a canceled July 7 Planning Commission meeting, with the next meeting scheduled for July 21.
Staff also reminded residents that the “one‑stop shop” at Malibu River Center continues to offer in‑person and virtual support for fire‑affected families, including on‑site assistance Tuesdays and Thursdays.
