Midyear flash: Evansville utility reports higher water operating revenues, lower expenses and increased investments

At a July 22, 2025, meeting the Evansville City Water and Sewer Utility presented its midyear (Q2) flash report showing modest revenue and expense changes and a shift from cash to investments.
Staff reported water operating revenues increased roughly 3.5% through June 2025 while water operating expenses fell about 3.5%; when depreciation is considered separately, operating expenses declined closer to 5%. That combination yielded a net-income improvement of about $4.3 million through the first half of the year on the water side, the presentation said.
On the sewer side, revenues were essentially unchanged year over year through midyear. Sewer operating expenses rose about 3.5%, but when depreciation is separated out staff said operating expenses decreased roughly 6%, producing a reported net-income increase of about $281,000.
Staff also said the utility has shifted some cash into investments to take advantage of higher interest rates; cash balances have decreased while investment balances have increased. The flash report will appear on the consent agenda for the next two months and staff plans to return with a Q3 update in September.
Board members asked no substantive questions after the presentation.
