Evansville parks board approves contracts and RFPs; staff outlines playground projects and summer events

At a July 2 meeting, the Evansville Board of Parks Commissioners approved several consent-agenda contracts and routine actions, authorized an RFP for the Swander concession stand, approved a return visit by Cali Tournies LLC for an adult hockey tournament in September, and accepted payroll and vendor claims. Parks staff also provided updates on construction projects and summer programming.
The board approved minutes of June 4 and June 11 and carried multiple consent-agenda items by voice vote, including an agreement with 5 Star Break Time Solutions for vending machines and a yearly elevator-maintenance agreement with Oracle Elevator Holdco covering Swander Ice Arena and the Pagoda. The board then authorized staff to advertise requests for proposals for the Swander concession stand after Andrea Lord, assistant facility manager at Swander, asked for permission to begin the process. Lord told the board, “I come today to ask permission to start advertising for the RFPs for our concession stand at Swander.”
The board also approved an agreement with Cali Tournies LLC to hold an adult hockey tournament at Swander Ice Arena in September 2025. Staff said the June 2024 event drew about nine teams, including some from out of town, and that the organizer typically divides entrants into multiple skill levels so more players can participate.
Parks staff provided project updates: playground equipment at Garvin Park has been removed and construction of a new activity zone is set to begin next week; site work has begun on the TP splash pad (a 2024 bond project); Stephenson Park’s playground and fencing installation is wrapping up with an anticipated opening this month; crews extended the swing set at Stoplight City by two bays; and other maintenance work is ongoing.
Staff also listed upcoming community events and programs: a park-squad cleanup at Jacobsville Park on July 10 at 6 p.m.; Parks Foundation Music in the Park on July 10 at Lorraine from 6–8 p.m.; “As Seen at CIMO” at Iglehart on July 11 from 5–7 p.m. with the theme “build your own beach”; a Movie in the Park showing Wicked at West Side Library on July 11 (food trucks at 7 p.m., movie at dusk); and the city swim meet July 12–13 at the Deaconess Aquatic Center featuring five city swim teams. Board members were directed to the parks department Facebook page for additional event information.
The motion to accept payroll and vendor claims carried by voice vote to close the meeting.
