Maury County schools adjust calendar after state validation; Jan. 2 and Dec. 22 reclassified

Maury County school leaders told the board that a previously approved 2025–26 school calendar required minor adjustments after the state identified two days the district had counted toward required days a year.
District staff reported they originally counted Thanksgiving Day and Christmas Day as part of the 200 instructional days required by the state’s reporting system. State review said those holidays were not to be counted as instructional days; the district therefore needed to add two compensating days between August and Memorial Day to meet the 200-day requirement.
The district’s response was to re-label two previously non‑work days. Jan. 2 — earlier shown as a full day off — was reclassified as an administrative/professional development day using the district’s allowance of shortened daily minutes to accrue days. Dec. 22 was reclassified as a discretionary day. Staff said the adjusted calendar has already received state approval.
The change affects how some professional staff will be scheduled and noted that principals and teachers will receive communications about the new use of those days and the district’s plan for professional development and administrative tasks. Staff said they will publish the revised calendar and include details about how district‑wide professional development will be scheduled on the added administrative day.
Board members agreed to place the revised calendar on consent for formal approval at the next voting meeting.
