Nursing department plans immunization clinic, fall flu shots and expanded vision/hearing screenings

The Springdale School District nursing department presented a fall health update to the school board on Sept. 9, outlining routine screenings, an immunization clinic and staff wellness offerings.
Amy Schultz, identified in the agenda as the nursing report presenter, said the department is completing hearing and vision screenings in pre-K, kindergarten, first, second, fourth, sixth and eighth grades using teams of five to seven nurses at each school. She emphasized early detection so children who need glasses receive them sooner to reduce barriers to learning.
Schultz said overdue immunizations are due Oct. 1 and that nurses and social workers are contacting families; students who miss the Oct. 1 deadline will not be allowed to return to school until immunizations are scheduled, she said. The district is partnering with Arkansas Children's Hospital to host an immunization clinic at Harbor High School on Sept. 15.
The department plans flu shots for all staff and students at every school and support building during October. Schultz also said staff hearing tests are available again this year through a vendor (Natural Hearing Centers) and that 67 employees received hearing aids last school year through the program.
Schultz said the district is preparing to redesignate all schools as HeartSave through Project Adam next semester; that training was credited with helping save a life at Walker Elementary last spring.
