Chad Johnson, activities director for Tri-City United School District, updated the board on spring and year-end accomplishments across athletics and fine arts and on recent investments in the district weight room.
"We had a national champion in weightlifting," Johnson told the board, identifying seventh-grader Max Rotter as the national champion in his age/grade/weight category at a tournament in Colorado Springs. Johnson also said the district’s fishing team won the first event of the year and named Griffin Pumper and Carson Plicic as champions of that tournament.
At the state level, Johnson reported qualifiers in trap shooting: "Addison Mann finished sixth in the state," and boys Bronco Schonbauer and Jacob Cheehak finished roughly in the 50–60 range among the top 100 boys. Johnson said the team finished tenth overall at the state meet and highlighted Caden Dietz’s 99 out of 100 performance in one state event.
Participation numbers show growth in multiple programs: the track program drew 138 students (up from 116 the previous year) and Johnson noted a coach-to-athlete compliance ratio that has stretched to roughly 1 to 23 for track (the district’s recommended range is 1 to between 10 and 19). He said the district may need to add a third softball team next year because rosters are large—about 17 athletes on both the A and B squads this year—leaving many athletes without playing time.
Johnson said the district invested just over $60,000 in weight-room equipment paid largely through internal sports program donations (voluntary contributions from volleyball, basketball, baseball and other programs) and expects roughly another $15,000 of equipment to arrive this summer. The weight room is open Monday, Wednesday and Friday for junior-high athletes, he said.
In fine arts, Johnson highlighted national awards including a John Philip Sousa award recipient (Olivia Skolacek) and the Louis Armstrong award winner (Max Boudin), and several band and choir merit recognitions.
Johnson concluded by noting staffing changes in activities: Bobby (last name not specified) resigned and the district has begun interviews; the district planned to conclude the interview process by July 7.
The activities report featured multiple recognition items, participation data and resource updates that the board accepted as informational.
