A district official explained: “I think this comes back to at this point, we need to let them Waconia Public Schools because we don't have another option. ... this is the organization that sponsors that.” The official also said Minnesota law and the MSHSL rules currently reflect the Minnesota Human Rights Act, and litigation is ongoing in other districts.
Board discussion covered three options: sign the renewal now, delay submission until closer to the July 31 deadline, or not rejoin the league. Members noted the practical consequence of not rejoining would be to forfeit league competition with other Minnesota schools for sports and many extracurricular activities.
A motion to approve renewal was made and seconded; one board member stated they would vote no because they wanted more information, but predicted the motion would pass. The board approved the renewal by voice vote (majority in favor; at least one board member recorded opposition on the floor). A board member said the district could still seek counsel after approving the resolution: “we can pass it and still get the, you know, the feedback from council.”
Action: The board approved the renewal resolution for MSHSL membership and staff indicated they would obtain additional legal guidance if the board requests it.
