Superintendent reports Dr. Knight transition, auction plans and enrollment update

Superintendent Greg Johnson told the Independent School District 482 board on July 14 that staff are moving teachers’ materials out of the Dr. Knight building and that student records removed from Dr. Knight are now stored at the district office for access. Johnson said district staff intend to offer a staff walkthrough of Dr. Knight for teachers to claim usable furniture or materials and that the district plans a public auction in the fall for remaining surplus items.
Johnson said the district plans to consult with the City of Randall about possible uses for the Dr. Knight building and will hold a work session on Aug. 18 to discuss next steps. He told the board that some outside inquiries about the closed building had already been received.
On enrollment, the board heard that roughly 30 families were confirmed as no longer attending the district, according to administrative calls made to families; district staff said they excluded families who had already registered elsewhere from that count. The meeting record also noted that the budget had been modeled assuming a larger enrollment shortfall (the transcript references a projection model figure of 59 students below earlier projections). Administrators said they were able to reassign teachers from Dr. Knight into other district positions and that the only position eliminated was the Dr. Knight principal position, which the board placed on unrequested leave later in the meeting.
Johnson and district staff listed several upcoming dates and events in the district calendar: open houses at Lincoln (5:00 p.m.) and Lindbergh (6:15 p.m.) on July 16 for Dr. Knight families, a possible cross-country meet inquiry on July 29, an active-threat tabletop exercise on July 29 that will include city and county officials, the annual fall sports meeting on Aug. 4, the next board meeting on Aug. 11, district registration on Aug. 12 (9 a.m.–6 p.m.), workshop week Aug. 25–28, and open houses for all schools on Aug. 27.
Johnson said staff were working with building administrators and other district staff to ensure materials and equipment from Dr. Knight are reused where practical, to minimize waste and maximize district resources. He said the district will publicly announce the auction and is likely to hold it in September or October for obsolete equipment that remains after staff claims.
