Holmes County commissioners voted to set a proposed millage rate of 10 mills for the upcoming budget cycle and scheduled the tentative budget hearing for 5:01 p.m. on Thursday, Sept. 4.
Angie (county budget staff) told commissioners they had received their budget books and that the proposed millage rate must be set during the process; she noted the board can lower but not raise the rate once set. “You can come down on that, but you cannot go up,” Angie said while explaining the mechanics of the proposed rate. The board approved a motion to set the rate at 10 and to hold the required tentative budget hearing in early September.
Commissioners were told the hearing must fall between Sept. 3 and Sept. 18 and cannot be held on Sept. 16 because of the school board schedule. Staff will publish required notices and bring the tentative budget before the commissioners at the Sept. 4 meeting for adoption or further changes.
