Oak Park begins five-year master plan update; housing assessment to be included

Oak Park staff told the Planning Commission on July 14 that the city is initiating its required five-year master plan update under the Michigan Planning Enabling Act. Staff said the last update occurred in 2020 and that state law now requires a housing assessment to be included in master plans following a recent amendment referenced during the presentation.
Staff said they were finalizing a request for proposals to hire a consultant and planned to issue the RFP on Wednesday, July 23. Staff also said the update process will include consideration of housing development on the city campus, including potential senior housing in connection with a new community center being planned for the site.
During the discussion commissioners asked routine questions about potential sites; staff said one nearby property is for sale but that its asking price is higher than the city would consider. Staff said they will return to the commission with process updates as the master plan work proceeds.
No formal vote was required; the item was presented for information and initiation of the update process.
