Advocates urge OPS to prepare for student supports after Nebraska’s LB 89 restricts transgender athletes

Schuler cited remarks by Governor Pete Ricketts (referenced in testimony as Governor Pillen in the transcript) at his June signing statement and said the comments risk encouraging vigilante enforcement of gender norms. She urged the board to prepare administrators, counselors and teachers to reduce harm by reviewing and enforcing anti-bullying policies and expanding mental‑health and support services for students.
The board did not take action during public comment. Schuler asked the district to plan for the “fallout” of the law and to communicate steps for bullying prevention and crisis support to protect all students.
