Residents press city on South Summerlin streetlight placement; downtown property owner seeks faster permitting

Residents said planned pole locations would place fixtures under the canopy of century‑old oak trees and leave other stretches underlit.
Mary Snipes said a single streetlight had been out for years and she was pleased to see work begin but criticized the placement plan and said she was disappointed that neither the city nor FPL had apparently reviewed the plan for the block. Stephen Snipes added that crews had indicated they were following the contractor’s drawing and that FPL and a city representative later met with neighbors and agreed to move some boxes to gaps rather than beneath trees.
Public Works staff and city commissioners said they were aware of the issue and would coordinate with FPL and the contractor. One commissioner asked staff to follow up; city staff said Mr. Johnson and Mr. Ramirez had been engaged and would continue to work with FPL to adjust placements.
Separately, Craig Johnson, a downtown property owner, said his friends had purchased and renovated the former gas station at 1219 Park Avenue and were struggling to obtain timely planning and permit approvals. He told commissioners the owners had followed Historic Preservation Board requirements and asked staff to consider fast‑tracking permits for small‑scale downtown projects to help rehabilitate vacant properties.
Commissioners acknowledged both concerns and directed staff to continue follow‑up with FPL on the streetlight placements and to review permitting timelines for downtown rehabilitation projects.
