City of North Port development services staff proposed a $2.5 million FY26 budget line to acquire environmentally sensitive land, funded from tree-mitigation and related dedicated fees.
Staff said the acquisition program is intended to protect wetlands, flood-prone parcels and habitat for species such as scrub jays and gopher tortoises. Commissioners requested that Natural Resources and Parks staff return with a prioritized list of parcels, ecological value assessments and potential partnerships (including conservation non-profits) that could assume long-term maintenance responsibilities.
Several commissioners noted the city already owns parcels that may be suitable for restoration and habitat enhancement. Commissioner Langdon asked staff to evaluate whether restoring an under-maintained city parcel adjacent to Mineral Springs (previously identified as former scrub-jay habitat) would be a higher-priority use of funds than buying new land.
Staff said they will prepare a recommended acquisition list and analyze grant and partner opportunities as well as options to minimize ongoing maintenance costs before any purchases are authorized.
