The Wicomico County Board of Education recognized the Mardella High School girls softball team as the 2025 1A state champions during its July meeting.
Dr. Stauffer, superintendent, opened the recognition: “the most important reason for our attendance here tonight, and that is to celebrate, the state championship team for girls' softball, which is, Mardella High School. So congratulations to them.” Board members asked the team and coaching staff to come forward for photos and certificates.
School and district presenters recounted the championship run. The board noted a season that included a 12-game win streak and a 1-0 semifinal victory in which pitcher Ava Twilley executed a trick play and later delivered a sacrifice fly to score the walk-off run. In the May 24 state final, Mardella fell behind 3-0 to Catoctin before Elena Donalds hit a two-out double in the bottom of the seventh to drive in the winning run; the board credited that play and Twilley's complete-game pitching performance in the championship.
Officials listed the roster and coaching staff onstage. The roster cited in the meeting included Delaney Leonard, Kate Quaid, Hayden Adkins, Elena Donalds, Kaylee Burdell, Bella Campbell, Abby Campbell, Ella Twilly, Ava Twilly, Audrey Semp, Maddie Primo, Lexi Guy, Cameron Doerr, Julia Wisk and Carson Shockley. The team manager was Ava Collins and head coach was Corey Shiles; assistant coaches named included Kenny Robinson, Michelle Jones, John Jones, Alexa Jones, Alicia Campbell, Kate Satterley, Bill Duck, Brooke Keane and Jen Powell.
A district presenter highlighted the team's academic and community contributions: the team's cumulative grade-point average was reported as 4.2, and players were credited with volunteer work such as supporting the Sharpstown carnival, Santa's Angels and a day of work to restore the West Salisbury Little League T-ball field.
The board noted this is the program's first state title since 1980 and that the roster will return largely intact next season. The recognition included certificates and photos taken during the meeting.
The presentation occurred during the superintendent's report portion of the July meeting.
