Public Works leaders told the City Commission June 17 that deferred maintenance across city facilities and infrastructure has grown and that an R&R (repair and replacement) reserve should be funded to avoid larger emergency repair costs.
City Manager Fletcher and Public Works staff summarized the department's FY26 requests and highlighted a facilities condition assessment that showed a multi-million-dollar backlog of deferred work. The department asked for seven positions and several proposals totaling an unfunded list of about $550,000; commissioners agreed by consensus to add $500,000 to the R&R account for FY26 to begin addressing that backlog.
Commissioners described the deferred-maintenance problem as urgent. Commissioner Langdon said repeatedly that deferring maintenance was "unacceptable." Staff said storms, recent heavy rains and hurricane responses had pulled crews off routine maintenance and increased the backlog.
Public Works also reviewed road rehabilitation funding and construction-traffic fees; commissioners requested clearer reporting on how construction-traffic fees and other dedicated funds are applied to road rehab projects. The commission asked staff to return in July with options for where the $500,000 would come from and the programs that would be cut or adjusted to fund it.
At the workshop there was no formal vote recorded; the item was recorded as a commission consensus direction to add $500,000 to an R&R fund and to produce a follow-up report with funding trade-offs.
