Commissioners on June 20 debriefed their participation in recent Pride events and discussed planning for an Outfest festival in October, while raising public-safety concerns about parade-route intersections.
Pride outreach: Commissioners said they handed out nearly all printed materials at the parade and festival and received multiple positive comments from attendees. A presenter said outreach will continue year-round and that a line item in the commission budget would be proposed for festival fees to ensure funds for tabling and event space.
Security concern at intersections: Commissioner Richard Parsapian expressed concern about inadequate barriers at intersections during the parade. “A truck could have easily plowed through any of those intersections as we were marching,” he said, and asked that the commission convey the concern to public-safety planners for future events. Staff said they would pass the concern to the city official in charge of parade planning.
Outfest planning: Commissioners said an initial planning meeting had identified possible locations and atmospheres for Outfest, with a tentative festival date of Oct. 11. Organizers said they would circulate a second meeting invite after internal conversations about city support and logistics.
Next steps: The commission plans to add a budget line for festival fees, continue distributing resources across events, and coordinate with public-safety and city departments on crowd-control measures for future parades and festivals.
