The Planning Department introduced Matthew Falcone as the city's new historic preservation planner and said staff will present revisions to the city's Article 7 ordinance to city council.
Falcone, who previously served as chair of the Historic Review Commission and worked at a nonprofit historic-preservation organization in Pittsburgh, said he had also served on the state's historic preservation board. "I know that for a while the planning department has been carrying all the preservation work on their shoulders," Falcone said. "It was a good transition to make for me because I know that... Iwant to help move it forward."
Falcone said staff will go before council the following day to discuss revisions to Article 7 and the changes to that ordinance. He said the ordinance posting produced a robust period of public comment and that feedback has been generally positive. He also said between "a half dozen and a dozen" community members have expressed interest in landmark nominations that could move forward once ordinance revisions are in place.
Planning Commission members welcomed Falcone and encouraged expedited work on nominations and preservation support. No formal vote was taken; Falcone's hiring is presented as a staff appointment and the Article 7 revisions will proceed through the council process.
