Board approves plans to bid Heber sidewalk project; estimated cost $3.2 million

County public works staff asked the board to approve plans and specifications so the department can solicit bids for the second phase of a large sidewalk project in Heber. The board voted to adopt the plans on July 22.
John Gay, public works director, said the project would complete about nine blocks that currently lack curb, gutter and sidewalks. He estimated the project cost at roughly $3,200,000 and said about $800,000 would come from the county’s Local Transportation Authority allocation. Gay said the work is funded through competitive grants (including a B‑617 competitive grant) and that the department anticipates returning with two additional sidewalk projects for Niland and Main Street work in the future.
Supervisor Martha Kalena Singh moved the motion to adopt plans and specifications; Supervisor Escobar seconded and the board voted to proceed. Gay told supervisors the project advances a broader county push to complete sidewalks and accessibility projects across multiple communities.
The board’s approval authorizes staff to release the project for bidding. When bids are received, the board will be asked to award the construction contract and approve any required budget adjustments.
