Board committee approves W. D. Thompson Park master plan; cost estimate updated to $3.63 million

The committee considered agenda item 2025-0918, the W. D. Thompson Park master plan for the site at 1760 Mason Mill Road. Director Ellis introduced Lauren King Lambert, project manager for parks, who presented the plan developed with Park Pride in 2024 and shaped by community meetings, surveys and site visits.
Lambert said residents prioritized preserving natural features, improving pedestrian connectivity and upgrading park amenities. The plan calls for stream restoration, improved bridges and boardwalks, new wayfinding features and habitat restoration. A 2024 project estimate of $3,240,000 was revised to $3,630,000 to reflect current costs; design and engineering for stream restoration is underway and the remainder of funding has not been identified.
Commissioners asked clarifying questions about the updated estimate and noted a substitute would be needed to update committee materials. The committee voted to approve the plan with a pending substitute to update the cost figure in the official binder and forwarded the recommendation to the full board.
