Derby marks construction milestone for new senior center as steel beam is signed

Derby city officials and contractor representatives marked a milestone July 22 in the construction of the city’s new senior center by signing a structural steel beam at City Hall and showing council members recent progress photos.
Tom Collier, assistant public works director, said the signing honored contributions from the city council, the senior center advisory board and Cross of Glory Church. "We're truly building a place that'll be around for decades to serve senior citizens in the Derby community," Collier said.
Hutton representative Chase said weather in May and June delayed work but crews have completed the building pad, placed plumbing under the slab and poured the slab. Chase said block walls are in place around the combined storm-shelter/restroom area and that the first steel arrived last week; he added that the project will begin going vertical "so, before you know it, there'll be walls and roof coming up next." Collier and council members said the team has adjusted sequencing of interior finishes to recover schedule time lost to rain.
Council members and members of the senior center advisory board took photographs and signed the beam at the meeting. Collier thanked the planning commission and Cross of Glory Church for their roles; he said the church’s donation was "an important, important role in reaching this exciting milestone."
