County and drainage districts approve tax-abatement amendments and new abatement agreements for Monte Cristo/Monte Alto wind projects

The Hidalgo County Commissioners Court and the Drainage District considered and approved amendments and new tax-abatement agreements with wind-power developers identified in the meeting as Monte Cristo Wind Power LLC, Montecristo Wind Power 2 LLC and Monte Alto Wind Power 2 LLC.

Randy Pettus of the county’s economic development staff presented the items. The second amendments to the December 2018 tax-abatement agreements with Monte Cristo Wind Power LLC were brought forward to amend the abatement periods; staff recommended approval. The court approved those amendments by motion. The court also approved proposed 2025 tax-abatement agreements between the county and Montecristo Wind Power 2 LLC and between the county and Monte Alto Wind Power 2 LLC; staff recommended approval on each and the motions carried.

The court recorded the actions as approvals; staff described the changes as adjustments to the abatement period(s). No project-specific financial terms or the length of the amended abatement periods were read into the public record during the motion votes; the court record notes staff recommendation and formal approval. No public comment was recorded on these items during the meeting.

Staff labeled the items “project Monte Cristo” and “project Monte Alto” internally; the court approved the authorizing orders and directed staff to proceed with execution and recording as required. The items were taken in open session following a related closed-session discussion of economic development matters.
