County proclaims July Parks and Recreation Month and highlights facility priorities

On July 21 the Onslow County Board of Commissioners presented a proclamation recognizing July 2025 as Parks and Recreation Month, introduced newly arrived Parks and Recreation director Todd Brown and heard county management describe parks priorities for the coming year.
Todd Brown, the county’s new director, told commissioners he joined Onslow County at the start of the month and praised staff for a full slate of summer programming, citing the July 4 Freedom Festival at Onslow Pines Park. The proclamation read by a board member said Onslow County Parks and Recreation served “over 2,600 youth through athletics, provided over 11 festivals and programs to our community and had over 1.1 visitors at our park and beach accesses” (language as read at the meeting).
County management said the board’s top parks priorities for the fiscal year include pursuing an indoor recreation facility, conducting comprehensive park improvements across the county and performing a complete refresh of Onslow Pines Park and Heinz Farm Park. The county manager also noted a recently advertised request for proposals for a fire service strategic plan/master plan and a summer program to expose rising high‑school students to county government operations.
The board presented the proclamation and recognized parks staff for their summer programming and community engagement. No formal action beyond the proclamation was required at the meeting.
