Lakeway — The City Council voted unanimously July 21 to take over maintenance of medians in the Serene Hills neighborhood and to provide the same 52-visit-per-year mowing schedule the city uses elsewhere.
Councilmembers returned item 7 to the dais after staff reported that the contractor Urban Dirt had told staff it currently services Serene Hills 44 times per year, not the 26 biweekly visits some council members had understood. Councilmember Sherman, who had requested the item be pulled for discussion, said she had checked the HOA contract and found the 44-visit figure; staff confirmed Serene Hills’ current contract level and the city’s 52-visit standard.
City staff told council the contractor’s proposed price for the city to take over maintenance at 52 visits would be $7,100 per month (about $85,200 annually). Councilmembers debated whether the city should match the HOA’s existing service level or treat Serene Hills the same as other city-maintained medians. Councilmember Brittenson argued the city should treat Serene Hills the same as other areas: “Their grass doesn’t grow faster,” he said during discussion.
After discussion and an absence of public speakers on the item, a motion to approve item 7 with the service changed to 52 visits a year passed unanimously.
The council did not identify an ongoing funding change beyond the budgetary line items implied by the contract; staff noted the contract amount exceeds an earlier $45,000 cap discussed by council, and the new level will require ongoing budget recognition.
Council direction: city to assume median maintenance at Serene Hills at the same weekly frequency used citywide (52 visits/year).
