A block party is planned for Saturday, Aug. 9. According to an organizer, the day’s program will begin in the morning with bike- and scooter-safety activities and a poker run with seven sponsor stations, followed by a chalk-art contest, bingo, live music, a free movie (Jurassic Park), taiko drumming performances, dance workshops and a headlining band in the evening. The organizer noted prizes sponsored by local businesses and said youth activities would be concentrated in the morning and mid-day.
Separately, Colleen Austin of the Gunnison Valley Cares Coalition described a Community Night Out that will begin at 5 p.m. and include booths offering blood-pressure and glucose screenings, ambulance tours and AED/CPR instruction, hearing and vision screenings, dental services pending confirmation, and teen-center activities. Austin said health-department grant funds are underwriting the event and asked the city to waive the pavilion fee and supply additional garbage cans and routine crew support for setup and cleanup.
Organizers and council members discussed coordinating logistics, staging, and vendor contacts. An organizer identified the proposed poker-run route as running on and near the West Trail, down to the River Walk and across Main Street, with seven stops sponsored by businesses. Council members suggested having businesses contact the named organizer and confirmed that city staff would coordinate trash cans and stage access.
