Muhlenberg County board adopts communication platforms, approves student fees and updates policies

The board then approved the 2025–26 student fees as required under board policy (identified in the meeting as board policy 091115).
On policy updates the board considered ASBA/KSBA board policy update number 48 on second reading. Presenters drew the board's attention to maternity-leave policy updates (policy 03.1233 for certified staff and 03.2233 for classified staff) and recommended the district retain its existing maternity-leave language for now, citing an implementation window through July 1, 2030. The board accepted that recommendation on second reading.
The board also considered proposed edits to telecommunications policy 09.4261. A presenter read the relevant language aloud: "students are prohibited from using a personal telecommunication device during an instructional time, except during an emergency or directed to do so by a teacher for an instructional purpose." The presenter said the board seeks to strike a later clause that would allow blanket teacher authorization, clarifying the only exceptions should be an emergency or teacher-directed instructional use. The board accepted the modification on second reading.
Finally, the board considered and approved second reading of board policy 091436, described in the meeting as an update to the district's response policies that would allow random checks using metal detectors during the school day in limited circumstances. The board approved the policy changes on voice vote with no recorded opposition.
